Amakusa Matsushima

Japanese: 天草松島 - あまくさまつしま

Located in the southwestern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, in the northern part of the Amakusa Islands, this group of islands is scattered between Oyano Island and the Matsushima area of Kamishima. It is part of Kamiamakusa City. It consists of 31 islands, including Maejima, Nagaurajima, Nakajima, and Hiaijima, and is part of Unzen-Amakusa National Park. It is named after Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture, because it resembles the island. The views from Mt. Sengan and Mt. Takabuto (nationally designated scenic spots) in the Matsushima area are particularly beautiful. In 1966, the Amakusa Five Bridges were completed, linking the islands from Misumi on the Uto Peninsula to the Matsushima area. Cruises depart from Aitsu Port in the Matsushima area for a tour of the Amakusa Five Bridges. Area 2.5 ^km2 . Population approximately 800 (1996).

熊本県南西部，天草諸島の北部にあり，大矢野島と上島の松島地区との間に散在する島嶼群。上天草市に属する。前島，永浦島，中島，樋合 (ひあい) 島など 31の島からなり，雲仙天草国立公園に属する。宮城県の松島に似ているのでこの名がある。特に松島地区の千巌 (せんがん) 山および高舞登 (たかぶと) 山 (国指定名勝) からの眺望はすばらしい。 1966年宇土半島の三角から松島地区までを島づたいに結ぶ天草五橋が完成。松島地区の合津 (あいつ) 港を基地に，天草五橋めぐりの遊覧船が出ている。面積 2.5km²。人口約 800 (1996) 。
