1880‐1932 A Swedish international financier known as the "King of Matches." Born in Kalmar in southern Sweden, he graduated from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and worked as a civil engineer in the United States and South Africa before returning to Sweden in 1907 to start his own business. He then merged domestic match companies to form the Swedish Match Company in 1917. After World War I, he lent funds he raised in the American and British financial markets to 15 countries, including Germany and France, which were suffering from postwar inflation, and in return acquired exclusive rights to sell matches in those countries. As a result, he developed into an international match trust that owned 250 factories in 43 countries and controlled more than half of the world's match production.
