Bechuanaland

Bechuanaland

… [Ken Akasaka]
[history]
The original indigenous people were the San who migrated from the north, but in the mid-17th century, the Bantu Tswana people moved south and drove the San into the Kalahari Desert. Since the first half of the 19th century, the area has been invaded by the Zulus from the south and the Boers from the Transvaal Republic, so Tswana King Khama III sought protection from Britain, and in 1885 the British protectorate of Bechuanaland was established. In 1895, Bechuanaland was incorporated into the British Cape Colony, and when the Union of South Africa was established in 1910, it came under the jurisdiction of the British High Commissioner in South Africa.
