Gyeonggi and Chungcheong-do are sometimes referred to as Giho, Gangwon-do as Kanto, Jeolla-do as Honam, and Gyeongsang-do as Yeongnam. The eight-province system of Hamgyong, Pyeongan, Hwanghae, Gangwon, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Gyeongsang, and Jeolla, which was established in the 15th century during the early Joseon period, was an excellent system that took into account natural geography, but during the Japanese colonial period, the five provinces of Hamgyong, Pyeongan, Chungcheong, Gyeongsang, and Jeolla were administratively divided into two provinces, north and south, to form a 13-province system, and currently, north and south have nine provinces each. …
