Also known as gonorrhea. A sexually transmitted disease caused by infection with gonococci. It is mainly transmitted through sexual intercourse. In men, acute anterior urethritis initially causes painful urination and purulent discharge. If inflammation spreads to the posterior urethra, symptoms become more severe, leading to frequent urination and increased susceptibility to complications of various reproductive organs such as epididymitis and balanoposthitis, as well as metastasis to distant organs. As the disease becomes chronic, symptoms become milder, with only gonorrhea and pieces of pus found in the urine, but drinking alcohol or overwork can cause acute symptoms. In women, it causes urethritis and cervicitis, redness and swelling of the urethral opening, painful urination, frequent urination, and purulent vaginal discharge. As the disease progresses, it can cause endometritis and salpingitis, and can metastasize to distant organs like in men, and if left untreated, it can become chronic. Treatment for both is with antibiotics such as penicillin.

淋疾とも。淋菌の感染によって起こる性病。主として性交により感染。男性では，初期には急性前部尿道炎により排尿痛や膿漏をみる。炎症が後部尿道に及ぶと症状が強くなり，頻尿(ひんにょう)を呈し，副睾丸(こうがん)炎，亀頭包皮炎などの各種生殖器の合併症や，遠隔臓器への転移を起こしやすくなる。慢性化すると症状は軽くなり，尿中に淋糸や膿片を認める程度だが，飲酒，過労などにより急性症状をきたす。女性では尿道炎や子宮頸管(けいかん)炎を起こし，尿道口の発赤・腫脹(しゅちょう)，排尿痛，頻尿，膿性帯下(たいげ)などをみる。進行すると子宮内膜炎，卵管炎などをきたすほか男性と同様に遠隔臓器へも転移，放置すると慢性症になる。治療は両者ともペニシリンなどの抗生物質投与。
