1923‐ A politician from the Republic of Singapore. Born into a Hakka family in Singapore, Lee studied at Raffles College in Singapore and Cambridge University in England. He qualified as a lawyer in 1950 and opened a practice in Singapore the following year, but in 1954 he founded the People's Action Party and became its secretary-general, entering politics. He became a member of the Legislative Assembly in 1955 and became Prime Minister of the Self-Government of Singapore in 1959. When Malaysia was formed in 1963, Singapore joined as one of its states, but in 1965 it separated to become the Republic of Singapore, with Lee as its prime minister.
