A gastropod shell of the Bucconidae family (illustration). The shell is elongated ovate, reaching a height of 7 cm and a diameter of 4 cm. It has 8 layers, each of which is slightly inflated, with the last layer being the largest. The shell is purplish-white with purple-brown spots, but the spots below the sutures and at the base of the shell are larger. On top of that, it is covered with a thin yellowish-brown skin, through which the spots can be seen, but as it ages, it turns blackish-brown all over. The shell opening is ovate, with an open umbilicus. The lid is dark brown and thick and leathery. It is found from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula, and lives on fine sandy bottoms from the intertidal zone to depths of 20 m. The spawning season is from May to August.

エゾバイ科の巻貝（イラスト）。殻は長卵形で，高さ7cm，径4cmに達する。巻きは8層で各層は多少膨らみ，最後の巻きは大きい。殻は帯紫白色で紫褐色斑があるが，縫合の下と殻底の斑は大きい。その上は黄褐色の薄い皮で覆われ，斑紋が透けて見えるが，老成すると全体黒褐色になる。殻口は卵形，臍孔（せいこう）は開く。ふたは濃褐色で厚い革質。北海道南部から九州，朝鮮半島に分布し，潮間帯から水深20mの細砂底にすむ。産卵期は5～8月。
