A city in the Yvelines department in northern France. Population 38,499 (1982). It is located on a hill along the Seine River, about 20 km west of Paris. It has been a royal castle since Louis VI built a fortress in the 12th century, but the current castle was built by Francis I in the early 16th century, with the exception of a small part. Louis XIV was born here, and used it as his court until he moved to Versailles in 1682, because he disliked the Louvre. The castle houses an archaeological museum, known for its excellent collection of Gallo-Roman artifacts. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
