A popular song was the mainstream of American popular music. It was the backbone of the American music industry from the early 20th century to the mid-1950s. The standard format was 32 bars of four lines of eight bars each. Professional lyricists wrote the words, composers set the music, and New York publishing companies known collectively as Tin Pan Alley (later to refer to the pop music industry) sold the sheet music. A male or female singer would record the song with an orchestra and sell it as a single record (78 or 45 rpm) with one song on each side.
