Japanese: ハナムグリ(花潜) - ハナムグリ（英語表記）Cetonia pilifera

An insect of the family Scarabaeidae in the order Coleoptera. Its entire body is covered with short brown hairs, and is a dull green color with white markings. It is about 15 mm long. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and adults appear from around April. It flies to various flowers, and as its name suggests, it dives its head into the flower to lick the nectar, and attaches a lot of pollen to its body. Females lay eggs in leaf mold or well-rotten rotten wood. The larvae feed on these and grow, and then pupate around the following spring. Species belonging to the subfamily Cetoniinae are sometimes collectively called flower beetles.

甲虫目コガネムシ科の昆虫。体は全体に褐色の短毛を生じ，光沢のない緑色で白い斑紋がある。体長15mm内外。北海道から九州まで分布し，成虫は4月ころから出現する。各種の花に飛来し，その名のように花に頭を潜り込ませてみつをなめ，体に多くの花粉を付着させる。雌は腐葉土やよく腐った朽木の中に産卵。幼虫はそれらを食べて成育し，翌年の春ごろ蛹化（ようか）する。　ハナムグリ亜科Cetoniinaeに属する種類を総称してハナムグリということもある。
