〘 noun 〙 A type of shamisen music. Traditionally, the shamisen (three-stringed instrument) was used as an accompaniment, but this is a new form of Japanese music in which it is used as the main instrument. It was invented by Kineya Sakichi IV, and the first piece was "Sumida no Shiki," composed in 1919. Most of the pieces are purely instrumental, but some, such as "Shinyo-ko," also include vocals.
