Temuco (English spelling)

Temuco (English spelling)
A city in south-central Chile. It is located about 220 km south-southeast of Concepcion, about 70 km inland from the Pacific coast, and overlooks the Cautin River. The Araucano Indians, who have lived in this area since ancient times, resisted the rule of Spain and then Chile for a long time. The city was founded as a frontier town after the area became Chilean territory in 1881 by a treaty between the Araucano people and the Chilean government, and gradually developed with the settlement of Europeans, mainly Germans. It is now the center of the surrounding agricultural region, distributing and processing wheat, apples, cattle, and timber. The city has a cathedral, the Araucano Museum, and an Indian market, and is a popular tourist destination because it is the entrance to the Chilean lakes and marshes area to the south and the base for the ski resort of Yaima Volcano in the Andes to the east. The Pan-American Highway and the Trans-Chilean Railway pass through the city. Population: 211,693 (estimated 1992).
