Born: Around 1180. Perugia, Umbria
Died August 1, 1252. A traveler from Antibari Italy, Dalmatia. He was the first European to travel in the Mongol Empire and leave valuable records about Central Asia. He became a priest in the Franciscan Order around 1220, and was in Cologne when the Mongol invasion occurred in 1241. Pope Innocent IV decided to officially dispatch a Catholic mission to Mongolia, and he was appointed as the head of the mission, leaving in 1245. He crossed the Dnepr, Don, and Volga rivers, and in April 1246, he met with Batu (Batu), a Mongol general on the banks of the Volga River, and then left for the center of the Mongol Empire. He crossed the Ural River and headed for the northern Caspian Sea, the Aral Sea, and the Syr Darya, traveling along the lakeside of the Dzungar Basin, and arrived at Karakorum (Helin), Shira Orda near the Orkhon River on July 22, 1246. He attended the coronation of Guyuk (Kiyou) and stayed there until November, then returned home with a letter from Guyuk to the Pope, arriving in Kiev on June 9, 1247. Shortly after his return, he was appointed Archbishop of Antibari. He compiled what he saw and heard during this trip in Historia Mongalorum quos nos Tartaros appellamus (abbreviated Historia) and Liber Tartarorum (also known as Tatarorum) (1245-47).

イタリアの旅行家。モンゴル帝国を旅行し,中央アジアに関して貴重な記録を残した最初のヨーロッパ人。 1220年頃フランシスコ修道会で司祭となり,1241年のモンゴル侵入時にはケルンにいた。インノケンチウス4世がモンゴルへ正式にカトリック使節団派遣を決定,その団長に任命され,1245年出発。ドネプル川,ドン川,ボルガ川を渡り,1246年4月ボルガ川河岸にいたモンゴル帝国の部将バトゥ (抜都)と会見したのち,モンゴル帝国の中心地に向けて出発。ウラル川を渡りカスピ海北部,アラル海からシルダリアへ向かい,ジュンガル盆地の湖畔を進んで,1246年7月 22日カラコルム (和林) ,オルホン川近くのシラ・オルダに到着。グユク (貴由)の即位式に参列して 11月まで滞在し,グユクからローマ教皇にあてた手紙を持って帰国の途につき,1247年6月9日キエフに戻った。帰国後まもなくアンティバリの大司教に任じられた。この旅行で見聞したことを『われらがタルタルと呼ぶモンゴル人の歴史』 Historia Mongalorum quos nos Tartaros appellamus (略称『ヒストリア』) と『タルタル人の書』 Liber Tartarorum (別称"Tatarorum") にまとめた (1245~47) 。
