Izvestia

Japanese: イズベスチヤ
Izvestia
A Russian newspaper. The organ of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. Izvestia means news. It was first published in St. Petersburg just after the Russian Revolution of 1905, and has been published intermittently since then as an illegal paper. In 1917 it became the organ of the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Union, and in 1936 it became the organ of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. It was second only to Pravda, the organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Since 1992 it has been a general newspaper. It has a circulation of about 800,000 copies. Due to an internal dispute within the editorial department, a separate weekly paper, New Izvestia, was also published in November 1997.
