Born: 19 April 1492 in Arezzo Died October 21, 1556. Venetian Italian poet and playwright. He studied literature in Perugia as a young man, and went to Rome in 1517. There, he was patronized by Agostino Chigi and Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, and published political and satirical poems, and many royalty and aristocrats feared his sharpness. It is well known that Ariosto named him "the whip of the princes." His major works include the collection of poems Opera nova (1512), Lettere (21-22), a collection of satirical dialogues Ragionamenti (36), comedies La cortigiana (25), La Talanta (42), L'ipocrito (42), and Il filosofo (44).
