Ajirogasa (woven straw hat)

A type of braided hat. Made by braiding cypress, bamboo, pine, cedar, yew, and other wood strips into a braid, there are two types: flat braid and twill braid. Cypress braided hats are called hinokigasa or hinokidama, and were also called gyojagasa or kisengasa because they were worn exclusively by ascetic monks of Omine in Yamato Province in the past. They are cone-shaped, and are now worn mainly by men in rural areas as lightweight hats to protect from the sun and rain. Bamboo braided hats are made hemispherical, and have also been used by monks and nuns since ancient times.

組み笠の一種。ヒノキをはじめタケ、マツ、スギ、イチイなどの経木(きょうぎ)を網代に組んでつくる笠で、平組みと綾(あや)組みの2種がある。ヒノキの網代笠は、ヒノキガサ、ヒノキダマとよばれ、古く大和(やまと)国の大峰(おおみね)の修験者(しゅげんじゃ)がもっぱら着装したので、ギョウジャガサ、キセンガサともよばれた。その形態は円錐(えんすい)形で、現在は、軽快な日よけ笠、雨よけ笠として、おもに農山村で男子が着用している。なおタケの網代笠は半球形につくられ、これも古くから僧尼に用いられていた。
