A former town in Minamiakita County, western Akita Prefecture. The eastern area is covered with forests, while the western area is covered with beautiful rice fields, producing a lot of rice. The Ou Main Line runs through the town. It also produces a lot of sake, miso, and soy sauce. In March 2005, it merged with Showa Town and Tenno Town in Minamiakita County to become a city, Katagami City. 15.80 km2 . 5,034 people (2003). 秋田県西部，南秋田郡の旧町。東部一帯は山林が広く，西部にかけては美田が開け，米を多産。奥羽本線が通じる。清酒，みそ，醤油の生産も多い。2005年３月南秋田郡昭和町，天王町と合併し市制，潟上市となる。15.80km2。5034人（2003）。
