This road tunnel runs through the St. Gotthard Pass near the border between Switzerland and Italy. The St. Gotthard Pass, at an altitude of about 2,100m, is a traffic chokepoint that is closed for six months in winter, so until now, cars were transported by loading them onto freight cars through a railway tunnel completed in 1882. However, as it could no longer cope with the increasing traffic volume, a new tunnel was built, the St. Gotthard Tunnel (Saint Gothard Tunnel), which began construction in 1969 and was completed in September 1980.
