A basin surrounded by mountains found in arid regions from the western United States to Mexico. Because it is an inland drainage basin where the flowing water does not reach the sea, a playa is formed in the center. Although some are formed by wind erosion, most are basins formed by fault movement. As a result, active erosion in the surrounding mountains produces a large amount of gravel, which fills the bolson. In the early stages of the formation of the bolson, many alluvial fans are formed in the surrounding foothills. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
