Mountaineer

Japanese:
Mountaineer
A Japanese nomad who lived a wandering life in the mountains and waterside areas without settling down. They lived from Kyushu eastward to the Kanto region. They lived a nomadic lifestyle, living in tents or temporary huts called seburi. Men made a living by catching river fish such as soft-shelled turtles and eels, while women made bamboo crafts such as winnowing baskets, sieves, and baskets. They were formerly called oge, noai, kanjin, ponsu, or riverside beggars. The origin of the name yamaboshi is unclear, but the prevailing theory is that they were originally puppeteers (kairaishi) of the Middle Ages. The population is also unclear because it is difficult to survey, and at the time the All Japan Winnowing Basket Makers' Union was formed in September 1949, it was estimated that there were about 14,000 people, but the actual number is thought to have been higher than this. Japanese:
