A spiritual being that serves God, mediates between God and humans, and sometimes protects humans. The Greek word ággelos, from which the English word angel originates, means messenger. It originated in Persian religion and spread to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Examples of animals acting as messengers of God can be found in many religions, but the idea of angels as intermediate beings between God and humans developed in religions such as those mentioned above, which have a strong sense of separation between God and humans. Angels play the role of conveying God's will, but they are not necessarily friendly to humans, and there are angels that rebel against God and do evil to humans, which are known as demons.

Angels and Hierarchies in Religions

In Persian Zoroastrianism, there are seven angels who share various powers of the god Ahura Mazda. In Judaism, four angels are well known: Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, and Uriel. In Christianity, angels are hardly considered in Protestant churches, but are considered important in the Roman Catholic Church, and they are divided into nine classes: the three higher classes of angels (Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones), the three middle classes of angels (Dominationes, Virtutes, and Potestates), the three lower classes of angels (Principatus, Archangels, and the three lower classes of angels). In Islam, which was influenced by Judaism, the four archangels, Jibril (Gabriel), who conveyed the Quran to Muhammad (Mohammed), along with Mikael, Azriel, and Israfil, are considered to be particularly important.

Heavenly beings, heavenly maidens and angels

Originally, angels were perceived as wind or light, but in artwork they came to be depicted as winged humans, and with the exception of devils, angels who rebel against God, angels who protect humans and encourage goodness increasingly take the form of women or children. Heavenly maidens and heavenly beings, known from legends such as Princess Kaguya from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, are inhabitants of heaven (the moon world) but temporarily reside in the human world, bringing happiness to the homes they inhabit. Just as Princess Kaguya must eventually be escorted back to heaven by the king of heaven, the heavenly maidens and heavenly beings who visit earth are reminiscent of angels carrying the will of heaven.

神に仕え、神と人間とを仲介し、人間の守護にあたることもある霊的存在。英語のエンジェルangelの語源となったギリシア語のággelosは使者の意味。ペルシアの宗教に始まり、ユダヤ教、キリスト教、イスラム教に入った。動物が神の使いを果たす例は諸宗教にもみいだされるが、神と人間との中間的な存在として天使の観念が発達するのは、前記の宗教のように神と人との断絶性が強い宗教の場合である。天使は、神の意志を伝える役割を果たすものの、人間にかならずしも好意的とは限らず、神に反逆し人間に悪事を働く天使もいて、これが、いわゆる悪魔になる。

諸宗教の天使と階級

ペルシアのゾロアスター教では、神アフラ・マズダーのもつさまざまな力を分有する7人の天使がいる。ユダヤ教では、ミカエルをはじめラファエル、ガブリエル、ウリエルの4天使がよく知られている。キリスト教では、プロテスタント教会においてはほとんど顧みられないのに対し、ローマ・カトリック教会では重要視され、天使は次の9階級に分けられている。熾(し)天使angeli seraphim、智(ち)天使angeli cherubim、座天使angeli throniの上級三隊、主天使angeli dominationes、力(りき)天使angeli virtutes、能天使angeli potestatesの中級三隊、権(ごん)天使angeli principatus、大天使archangeli、天使angeliの下級三隊である。イスラム教ではユダヤ教の影響を受け、ムハンマド（マホメット）にコーランを伝えたジブリール（ガブリエル）以下、ミーカーイール、アズリール、イスラフィールの諸天使が四大天使とされてとくに重要な位置を占めている。

天人・天女と天使

もともと天使にあたる存在は、風や光として感じ取られることもあったが、美術作品などでは翼をもつ人間の形で表現されるようになり、神に背いた天使である悪魔を除くと、人間を守り善を勧める天使は女性や子供の形をとるものがしだいに多くなっている。『竹取物語』のかぐや姫などの伝説で知られる天女や天人は、天（月世界）の住人であったものが、一時的にせよ人間界に身を置いて、その住む家に幸福をもたらす。かぐや姫がやがて天の王の迎えに伴われて天に帰らなければならないように、地上を訪れる天女や天人には、天の意を帯びた天使のおもかげがみられる。
