Short pants-style underpants for men with a generous gusset under the crotch. Depending on the era and the person's social status, men's underpants were either ones with a crotch called tabusagi or shitahakama, or ones with a cloth wrapped around the crotch called loincloth or fundoshi. After the Meiji period, as people began to wear Western clothing, fundoshi became the norm, replacing fundoshi. The word's origins are said to be from the Meiji period, and there are two theories: one is that it is a backwards version of a type of hakama called matashare, and the other is that it comes from the word kyarumata, which was used in some regions. However, it was already in use in the Edo period as an abbreviation of saru momohiki.

股下に襠（まち）をいれてたっぷりさせた，パンツ形式の丈の短い男性用下ばき。男性の下ばきは，時代や身分によって犢鼻褌（たふさぎ），下袴（したのはかま）と呼ばれる股のあるものと，下帯，褌（ふんどし）などと呼ばれる布を巻く形式があった。明治以降，洋装への転化によってそれまでの褌からさるまたへと一般化した。語源は明治時代にできた言葉で，マタシャレという袴の一種を逆さに言ったという説と，一部の地方で使われていたキャルマタという言葉から出たという説があるが，猿股引（さるももひき）の略語としてすでに江戸時代に使われていた。
