A former town in Makabe district, western Ibaraki prefecture. Most of the land is flat and rice, wheat and vegetables are cultivated. There is a bus connection to the former Shimodate city. In March 2005, Shimodate city, Makabe district's Sekijo town and Kyowa town were merged to form Chikusei city. 48.35 km2 . Population 17,807 (2003).
