This bridge connects Higashi-Nihonbashi in Chuo Ward and Ryogoku in Sumida Ward, Tokyo. After the Great Fire of Meireki (1657), Honjo and Fukagawa were opened up in order to expand the urban area of Edo, and the bridge was first built in 1659 (Manji 2). After that, it was repaired and rebuilt after several fires and floods, and was replaced with an iron bridge in 1904 (Meiji 37). The current Ryogoku Bridge was renovated in 1932 (Showa 7). The bridge was originally called Ohashi, but after the construction of the Shin Ohashi, it was also called Nishu Bridge as the Sumida River was the border between the provinces of Musashi and Shimousa, and was later officially renamed Ryogoku Bridge. [Kikuchi Masao] The smartly shaped Gerber girder bridge was first built in 1659 (Manji 2) and is often depicted in nishiki-e (colored woodblock prints). It is the second oldest bridge on the Sumida River. It was completed in 1932 (Showa 7). Total length is 164.5m.
