A village in Kamiminochi County in northern Nagano Prefecture. Population 3,085 (1995). West of Nagano City, most of the village is in the Tsuchijiri River basin, a tributary of the Sai River, and part of it spans the Susobana River basin to the north. The area is the rugged Chikuma Mountains, and settlements are also found on the slopes of Mushikurayama (1,378m) towering to the north. In addition to sericulture and livestock, apples, tobacco, and other crops are cultivated. There are many slopes, and rice paddies are very few. Depopulation is progressing, but the number of people commuting to Nagano City is increasing. The Olympic Road (Nagano-Hakuba route), which opened in 1997, crosses the southern part of the village area. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
