Sarpi, Paolo

Sarpi, Paolo
Born: August 14, 1552, Venice
[Died] June 16, 1623.
Italian Catholic theologian, historian, and politician. Also known as Fra Paolo. He is known for being excommunicated in 1607 for his strong opposition to the Pope's interference in Venice and the Society of Jesus as an elected theological consultant for the Republic of Venice. He showed talent from an early age, and in 1565 or the following year, he joined the Congregation of the Servants of the Virgin Mary, and served as its vicar general from 1585 to 1588. During this time, he devoted himself to the study of science and philosophy, but his sympathy with Protestants brought him under suspicion from the papacy. His main work, Historia del concilio tridentino (1619), is a criticism of the papacy after the Council of Trent, and although it lacks accuracy as a historical text, it is vividly written and has been widely read in many languages.
