Salvarsan - Sarubaru-san (English spelling) Salvarsan

The world's first syphilis treatment, discovered jointly by Ehrlich and Hata Sahachiro in 1910. It was the commercial name for arsphenamine and arsenobenzol, and was commonly referred to as No. 606 because its development number was the 606th compound. It was subsequently improved, and "Neosalvarsan", "Neoneosalvarsan", and acetazole were sold commercially, but because it is an arsenic compound and has side effects, it is no longer used at all due to the advent of antibiotics. The name comes from the Latin phrase meaning "arsenic that saves the world".

1910年にエールリヒと秦佐八郎(はたさはちろう)が共同で発見した世界最初の梅毒治療剤。アルスフェナミン、アルゼノベンゾールの市販名であり、開発番号が606番目の化合物であったので606号と俗称された。その後改良が加えられ、「ネオサルバルサン」、「ネオネオサルバルサン」、アセタゾールなどが市販されたが、ヒ素の化合物で副作用があるため、抗生物質の出現により現在はまったく使用されていない。語源はラテン語で「世を救うヒ素」の意。
