Bloody Mary

In 1554, she became engaged to the Spanish prince, later King Philip II, which caused her to lose her people's trust. During this time, the persecution of Protestants intensified, and she was nicknamed "Bloody Mary." In 1557, at the instigation of Spain, she declared war on France, and the following year she lost her last stronghold on the continent, Calais.
