The capital of Salta Province in northwestern Argentina. It is located about 220 km north of San Miguel de Tucuman, on the eastern slope of the Andes, in the Lerma Valley, carved by the source of the Salado River, a member of the Rio de la Plata River system, at an altitude of about 1,190 m. Founded in 1582, it developed as a commercial center during the colonial period, and was known especially for hosting a large livestock market. It was a battlefield during the War of Independence, and in 1813, the independence forces under the command of M. Belgrano defeated the Spanish colonial government forces. Currently, as a commercial and industrial center, it distributes and processes agricultural and livestock products, forestry products, and minerals produced in the province. Although the city has often suffered severe damage from earthquakes, many colonial-era buildings, including the cathedral, have been preserved, and there are hot springs nearby, making it a tourist and health resort. In recent years, it has attracted attention as a research center for the Inca and other Indian cultures before the Spanish conquest. It is also the home of the Catholic University of Salta (1967). The city is connected to the rest of the country by rail and road, and there is also a railroad that crosses the Andes to the port of Antofagasta in Chile. Population: 373,857 (1991 estimate).
