Salutati - Coluccio Salutati (English spelling)

Salutati - Coluccio Salutati (English spelling)

Italian humanist, man of letters, and politician. He was active as the secretary of the Republic of Florence from 1375 until his death, and had a great influence on the politics and culture of the time. He believed that a free civic life was the foundation of the existence of the city-state, and with his willpower he tried to apply the knowledge he gained from classical studies and the teachings of ancient philosophers to real life. He also used his pen as a weapon to boldly confront foreign enemies and lords from other countries who threatened the freedom of Florence, and was feared by his enemies. He is a rare example of eloquence, scholarship, and practice being unified in one individual. He placed importance on reading the classics in the original rather than Latin translations, and opened a public Greek language course in the city. He is also famous as the discoverer of Cicero's letters.
