Argelander (English spelling) Friedrich Wilhelm August Argelander

German practical astronomer. In 1817, he entered the University of Königsberg, where he was interested in Bessel's astronomy, and became his assistant upon graduation in 1820. In 1823, he was dispatched to Sweden to help build the Öbo University Observatory, and in 1832 he became director of the Helsinki Observatory. In 1837, he became a professor at the University of Bonn, where he oversaw the construction of the observatory, and upon completion in 1845, he became director, and continued observations throughout his life. From 1864 to 1867, he served as president of the German Astronomical Society. At the Bonn Observatory, he used a 7-centimeter, 10x magnification equatorial refracting telescope to systematically observe the proper motions of stars, and proved the spatial motion of the solar system with approximately 390 observations. He also created a method for visually measuring and naming variable stars, which is still used internationally today. From 1859 to 1862, he observed stars of magnitude 9.5 or higher in the northern sky, and in 1863 published the Bonn Catalogue and Star Atlas, which contained the positions and magnitudes of 324,198 stars.

ドイツの実地天文学者。1817年ケーニヒスベルク大学に入学、ベッセルの天文学に傾倒し、1820年卒業と同時にその助手となった。1823年スウェーデンのオボ大学天文台の建設に派遣され、1832年ヘルシンキ天文台長。1837年ボン大学教授に就任し天文台建設を指揮、1845年完成と同時に台長となり、終生観測を続けた。1864～1867年ドイツ天文学会会長。ボン天文台では口径7センチメートル、倍率10倍の赤道儀式屈折望遠鏡を使用し、恒星の固有運動を系統的に観測、約390個の観測資料により、太陽系の空間運動を実証した。また変光星の眼視測定法および命名法を創出したが、これは今日も国際的に通用している。1859～1862年、北天9.5等星以上の恒星を測定し、1863年に32万4198個の恒星の位置と等級を収録した『ボン掃天星表』および星図を発表した。
