University of Amsterdam - amsterdam university

Located in the capital of Amsterdam, it is the largest national university in the Netherlands with nearly 30,000 students and over 5,000 staff. It has seven faculties: humanities, social and behavioral sciences, economics and business administration, law, natural sciences, medicine, and dentistry. It is a highly international university, cooperating with the League of Research Universities (LERU) , which has 23 member universities in Europe, for basic research, and a member of U21, which promotes student mobility with 27 universities around the world. It was originally founded in 1632 as the Athenaeum Illustre , a higher education institution open to citizens to enhance the city's status, and played a role in supporting the education of the people during the Golden Age of the Netherlands. In 1877, it gained status as the City University of Amsterdam, and the appointment and dismissal of faculty members was also carried out by the city council, developing into a university for the citizens. For almost 100 years until it became a national university in 1961, it excelled in natural science research, producing six Nobel Prize winners and seven Spinoza Prize winners. The University is ranked 63rd in the Times World University Rankings (2016/17) , but 32nd in humanities and 26th in social sciences.
