A port town in Sassari province on the northwest coast of the Italian island of Sardinia. Population 36,383 (1981). The hilly area to the east of the port produces wine and olives, and inshore fishing and coral harvesting are carried out. The town is also known abroad as a health resort. It came under Genoese control in the early 12th century, but was conquered by the Catalans of Spain in 1353. Spanish-style church architecture remains, and the residents still speak Catalan today, and have inherited Spanish customs.
