A town in the Jura department in eastern France. Population 4,181 (1982). A spa resort in a gorge on the western edge of the Jura Mountains. At an altitude of 360m. Woodworking and ceramics are also thriving here. Salt production was an important industry from the Gallo-Roman period to the mid-19th century, thanks to the high concentration of salt in the springs. Today, the springs are used by a spa resort to treat stunted growth in children, arthritis, and gynecological diseases. The church of Saint-Anatoire is a masterpiece of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Franche-Comté. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
