A master of the Kyoto-Osaka shamisen in the early Edo period. He is considered on a par with Yamamoto Kiichi. He was active from the Genroku to Shotoku periods (1688-1716). He was commonly known as Jiroza. He was the owner of Izutsu, Gion-cho, Kyoto. In November 1705, he played the standing shamisen at the Kyoto Sounza Theatre. He composed most of the dance pieces for Sakakiyama Koshiro and his son. There is an anecdote that he composed "Numeri," a piece used at the beginning of the "Keisei" performance, and played each of the ranks of the "Keisei" into 17 different tones. He is said to have owned a famous instrument bearing the name "Narukami." His representative works include "Utauran (Seki)," "Kitsunebi," "Kure no Kane," "Konkuwai," "Sato Keshiki," "Shojo," "Sekiji Komachi," "Dojoji," "Hokazo," "Matsukaze," and "Rokudan Renbo."
