A master of the Kyoto-Osaka shamisen in the early Edo period. He is considered on a par with Yamamoto Kiichi. He was active from the Genroku to Shotoku periods (1688-1716). He was commonly known as Jiroza. He was the owner of Izutsu, Gion-cho, Kyoto. In November 1705, he played the standing shamisen at the Kyoto Sounza Theatre. He composed most of the dance pieces for Sakakiyama Koshiro and his son. There is an anecdote that he composed "Numeri," a piece used at the beginning of the "Keisei" performance, and played each of the ranks of the "Keisei" into 17 different tones. He is said to have owned a famous instrument bearing the name "Narukami." His representative works include "Utauran (Seki)," "Kitsunebi," "Kure no Kane," "Konkuwai," "Sato Keshiki," "Shojo," "Sekiji Komachi," "Dojoji," "Hokazo," "Matsukaze," and "Rokudan Renbo." 江戸時代初期の京坂三味線方の名手。山本喜市と並び称せられる。元禄~正徳 (1688~1716) 頃活躍。通称次 (治) 郎三。京都祇園町井筒の主人。宝永2 (05) 年 11月京都早雲座の立三味線。榊山小四郎父子の舞踊曲の大半を作曲。傾城の出端に用いる『ぬめり』を作曲し,傾城の位を 17の音色に弾き分けたという逸話がある。「鳴神」の銘の名器を所持したともいわれる。代表作『歌占 (責) 』『狐火』『暮の鐘』『こんくわい』『里景色』『猩猩』『関寺小町』『道成寺』『放下僧』『松風』『六段恋慕』。
