Born: August 29, 1861. Girard Doeff [Died] March 7, 1948. British theologian and church leader. Born in Russian Poland, he studied philosophy and theology at the universities of Edinburgh, George Washington, and Glasgow, and became a Congregationalist minister. He later became a professor at the University of Hampshire and New College in London, where he lectured on theistic philosophy, comparative religion, and Christian ethics, and was made honorary rector in 1933. He was a major contributor to the movement for ecumenism, and served as chairman of the Congregational Church of England (1919), chairman of the National Council of Churches in England, deputy chairman of the first Conference of Faith and Orders held in Lausanne, Switzerland (27), and chairman of the Free Church of England (28). He took a moderate theological stance in the style of Ritschl, and was also editor of the Westminster New Testament Commentary series. His major works include "The Ethics of Temperance" (1895), "The Ritchlian Theology" (99), "Commentary on Romans" (1901), "The Purpose of God in Christ" (19), "Revelation through History and Experience" (34), and "The Christian Faith" (36).
