This butterfly belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Nymphalidae. It is found in the area from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is commonly seen in mountain grasslands. It is rarely found in the plains of warm regions, even if it is found there. Outside of Japan, it is widely found in the northern part of the Eurasian continent, from the Korean Peninsula and northeastern China to Europe. Its wingspan is about 60-65 mm, and its surface is orange with many black spots, and its Japanese name "Hyomon" comes from this characteristic color. The underside of its hind wings has many silvery white spots, and its name "Uragin" comes from this characteristic. It appears once a year, appearing in warm regions from early May to early June. It hibernates during the hot summer months and hides, but reappears in autumn. In cold regions, it appears from late June to early July, and does not hibernate. The larvae feed on violets and other plants, such as the Polygonaceae plant, Polygonaceae. It is said that they overwinter as eggs or first instar larvae.
