The capital of Las Palmas province in the Canary Islands of Spain. Population 360,098 (1981). Located in the northeast of Gran Canaria, it is a tropical resort town. It is a free port and a base for international deep-sea fishing. The disparity between rich and poor is widening due to an unbalanced economic structure that relies on primary industries and tourism. Poverty and dissatisfaction with the national government, including its unilateral incorporation into NATO's South Atlantic military strategy, have led to separatist movements and terrorist activities supported by the Organization of African Unity in recent years.
