Japanese: 日本俠客伝 - にほんきょうかくでん

This is one of the representative series of Toei yakuza films that flourished in the 1960s, and a total of eleven films were made, from Nihon Kyoukaiden in 1964 to Nihon Kyoukaiden: Dosu in 1971. The lead role was played by Takakura Ken (1931- ), a representative star of Toei yakuza films in the 1960s. Each film is independent and is set in a variety of historical periods, from the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa eras, but they have in common the depiction of a battle between a chivalrous man and corrupt gamblers. The portrayal of chivalry is particularly distinctive; whereas most other yakuza films feature a yakuza as the protagonist, in this series the protagonist is almost always someone who works in a legitimate occupation, such as a transport worker or firefighter, and challenges the ruthless gamblers out of a chivalrous spirit rooted in the working world, rather than the chivalrous spirit of the yakuza.

1960年代に隆盛した東映やくざ映画の代表的シリーズの一つで，1964年の《日本俠客伝》から71年の《日本俠客伝･刃（どす）》まで，計11本つくられた。主演は1960年代の東映やくざ映画の代表的スター･高倉健(1931‐　)。各作品は独立していて，時代背景も明治，大正，昭和初期とさまざまであるが，俠気の士と悪徳博徒との闘いを描く点では共通している。とくに俠気の描き方に特徴があり，他の多くのやくざ映画では主人公がやくざであるのに対し，このシリーズではほとんどの場合，主人公は運送業や火消しなど正業に従事する人物であり，やくざの任俠道ではなく労働の世界に根ざした俠気から，非道な博徒に闘いを挑むという形になっている。
