A city in the southwest of Fukui Prefecture, facing Wakasa Bay. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. It was the location of the Wakasa provincial capital in the past. The central city has been a port town since the Middle Ages, and in the early modern period it was a castle town for the Kyogoku and Sakai clans. The Obama Line and the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway run through the city. The city is blessed with good fishing grounds in the inland sea of Obama Bay and the open sea of Wakasa Bay, making it a thriving fishing industry, and in recent years it has also been focusing on aquaculture. It also manufactures transportation equipment and food products. Wakasa lacquerware and agate crafts are local specialties. There are many scenic spots such as Sotomo, and the coast is included in Wakasa Bay Quasi-National Park. There are many ancient shrines and temples in the city, including Wakasahiko Shrine, Wakasahime Shrine (Wakasa Ichinomiya and Wakasa Ninomiya respectively), Jinguji Temple, famous for the Omizutori ritual, Myotsu-ji Temple, which has many cultural properties such as national treasures and important cultural properties, and Haga-ji Temple.
