An indigenous Mayan-speaking people living in about 20 villages in the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico. They have a population of about 280,000, almost half of whom also speak Spanish. In addition to cultivating corn, beans, and pumpkins using slash-and-burn agriculture, they also produce coffee and bananas in the warm valleys, and apples and potatoes in the cold mountain regions. Each village has its own cultural type and social organization, and there are restrictions on endogamy. Villagers live in numerous subdivisions scattered throughout the village area, and gather in the central settlement where the church, town hall, and shops are located almost exclusively on Sundays, when markets are held, or on festival days; this village structure is thought to be a tradition dating back to the Classic Maya civilization.
