Domostroi (English spelling)

...The "Velikie Chet'i-Minei" (1552), a collection of the Lives of the Great Saints by Metropolitan Makaria (c. 1483-1563), who was a spokesman for the ideals of a theocratic state, became a source of nourishment for the religious faith of the Russian people, and through the faith of the people, it also had a great influence on 19th century Russian literature. In the 16th century, there were many unique works, such as the "Correspondence" (1564-1579) between Ivan the Terrible and his enemy Prince Andrei Mikhailovich Kurbskii (1528-83), a masterpiece of "political and social commentary," and the "Domostroi" (Instructions for Household Affairs) (early 16th century), a magnificent expression of patriarchy. The unity and isolation of the Moscow period was fundamentally shaken by the "Troubles" of the early 17th century and the "Schismatic Schism" (Raskol) in the mid-17th century, and new elements appeared in literature. ...
