It is a folk instrument found widely in the Mediterranean region, including Egypt, North Africa, Western Asia, and Sardinia. It is a double-piped reed flute that is called by various names depending on the region, such as Zummara (Arabic), Chihte (Turkish), Dozare (Persian), Mitbaj (Iraq), and Launeddas (Sardinia). The etymology of the arghul is thought to be a variation of urghun, which was an Arabic word for organ in the Middle Ages. The arghul comes in various sizes, but usually consists of two reed pipes, each 10-15 mm in diameter and 200-250 mm long, tied together, and the thinner reed pipe is cut to a length of about 60 mm, and a single reed made by cutting a square-shaped notch into it is inserted into each pipe.
