A barium salt of titanic acid (titanium(IV) oxide hydrate, TiO 2 · n H 2 O, as it is commonly called). It is also called barium titanate(IV). Two isomers are known. (1) Barium orthotitanate: Chemical formula Ba2TiO4 , formula weight 386.62. A dark red powder obtained by mixing barium carbonate and titanium(IV) oxide in a molar ratio of 2:1 and heating to approximately 1270°C. It is an ionic crystal consisting of a tetrahedral titanate ion and barium ion. (2) Barium metatitanate: Chemical formula BaTiO 3 , formula weight 233.26. Its official name is barium titanium trioxide. It is a colorless crystal obtained by high-temperature solid-state reaction with different mixture ratios or by thermal decomposition of barium titanyl oxalate tetrahydrate (barium oxide titanium(IV) oxalate tetrahydrate) Ba(TiO)(C 2 O 4 ) 2・4H 2 O, and is what is usually meant by barium titanate. It undergoes the following phase transition from low to high temperatures.
