A work by Roman politician and historian Tacitus. The original title is On the Origin and Customs of the Germanic People. It is the first comprehensive work on Germania, describing the Germanic tribes north of the Rhine and Danube. It was published in 98 AD. It is interpreted as a moral warning to the Romans against the threat of the north, contrasting the emerging Germanic people with the decadent Romans, but there is also a theory that it was born out of pure intellectual interest. It consists of 46 chapters in total, each of which is a short narrative. It is divided into two parts: the first part (chapters 1-27) is an overview of the general customs, rituals, and weddings of the Germanic people, and the second part (chapters 28-46) is a description of each of the Germanic tribes. It is considered to be the first historical source on the history of the primitive Germanic people and ancient German history, along with Caesar's The Gallic Wars.
