Sodosha

Japanese:
Sodosha

A Western painting group in the Taisho period. It was founded in 1915 (Taisho 4) with its first exhibition being held by the Contemporary Art Society, led by Kishida Ryusei, and disbanded after its 9th exhibition in 1922. In addition to Ryusei, other members included Kimura Shohachi, Seimiya Hitoshi, Tsubaki Sadao, Nakagawa Kazumasa, Yokobori Kakujiro, and later Kono Michisei. The group's style was dominated by Ryusei's, who was devoted to Scandinavian Renaissance at the time, and was characterized by dark tones and detailed depictions, which stood in clear contrast to the modernism of the Nika school. This Sodosha-style realism was closely related to the humanitarianism of the literary magazine Shirakaba (first published in 1910), and had a great influence on young painters of the time. After the group disbanded, its core members participated as guests in the founding of the Shunyo-kai group, and vestiges of their style can be seen in its early days.
