A prophet of Israel who lived around the end of the 11th century BCE. One of the most prominent figures in the history of Israel from Moses to David. In the Book of Samuel, he is portrayed as a seer, a Nazirite, and the last judge. The story of Samuel contains many embellishments and exaggerations, making it difficult to grasp his exact character. Samuel was born as a result of the fervent prayer of his mother Hannah (his father was Elkanah) and grew up in the sanctuary of Shiloh. As a boy, God appeared to him and foretold the fall of the house of Eli, the priest of Shiloh, which prompted him to become a prophet (1 Samuel 3:2-20). As a Nazirite, he did his best to protect the faith of Yahweh from the syncretism of worshiping the god Baal, but his greatest achievement was leading Saul and David and establishing the monarchy of Israel.
