...Because mastering copperplate engraving requires more practice than other techniques and the finished product has a classical, complete feel, it fell out of favor in the second half of the 19th century, but it saw a small revival in the 20th century.

The second most important technique after engraving is etching (Eau-forte in French). In etching, the artist scratches a copper plate coated with ground (vernis in French), a corrosion inhibitor against nitric acid, with a needle.
