It occupies the northern part of the United Arab Emirates and is one of the member states of the federation. It is also written as Umm al-Qaiwain or Umm Rghwain. In English, it is called Umm al-Qaiwain. It has an area of 777 km2 and a population of 35,000 (1996). Its capital is Umm al-Qaiwain. The country's name means "mother of strength." It was once a good natural harbor and was probably quite prosperous, but now it has the smallest population of the federation and the smallest number of people entering and leaving the country. Financially, it is heavily dependent on Abu Dhabi. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
