Born in the Laweyan district, the center of batik (Javanese wax-resist dyeing) in Surakarta, he became famous as a wealthy batik merchant. After making a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1904 and receiving the title of Haji, around 1905 he began to urge batik merchants in Surakarta to unite against the infiltration of economic domination by overseas Chinese.
