1868‐1956
An early leader of the Indonesian nationalist movement, and founder of the Islamic Trade Union, an organization of small Muslim merchants. Born in the Laweyan district, the center of batik (Javanese wax-resist dyeing) in Surakarta, he became famous as a wealthy batik merchant. After making a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1904 and receiving the title of Haji, around 1905 he began to urge batik merchants in Surakarta to unite against the infiltration of economic domination by overseas Chinese. As a result, the Islamic Trade Union was formed in Surakarta in 1911.

インドネシア民族運動の初期指導者で，イスラム系小商人の団体，イスラム商業同盟の設立者。スラカルタのバティック(ジャワのろうけつ染め)の中心地であるラウェヤン地区に生まれ，富裕なバティック業者として名をなした。1904年にメッカに巡礼してハジの称号を得たのち，05年ころからスラカルタのバティック商人に対して，華僑の経済的支配の浸透に団結して当たるよう説きはじめた。この結果，11年に同地でイスラム商業同盟が結成された。
